For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am American (Norwegian, German, Czech), living in U.S.A. (California), a senior (but not retired), married and with a family; I attend Evangelical Covenant, am a microbiologist (Ph.D.), my birthday is January 30; I love the Lord and your fellowship,

First light

At age 12, I joined the Lutheran church.
As part of the study group,
I had accepted the doctrine
of justification by faith;
at least, I supposed that I had.
But without realizing it,
I was thinking my efforts
and baptism and church membership
were counting toward salvation.

Something seemed to be missing.
So years later, I went forward
at an evangelistic crusade
and prayed the sinner's prayer.
But without realizing it,
I still supposed
that being saved and staying saved
depended in part on us.

Something was still missing.
I began looking at different denominations.
I could not decide on one or the other.
Then the Mormons came along,
and after a series of lessons
I became a member of that church.

Now my efforts and baptism
and church membership
were supposedly earning godhood.
The spirit manifesting itself
(as in answering prayers)
was assumed to be the Spirit of God,
and the additional books of revelations
were assumed to be from God.

Eventually, I became aware
that the founder had used a peep stone
to hunt for buried treasure
(a common occult activity of his day),
and that he had used the same stone
to produce most of his new bible.
But that occult activity
that should have concerned me
did not.
In fact, though I studied in depth
the arguments against Mormonism,
and had many Christians
coming across my path,
I could not be reached.

I became part of the local leadership,
yet something still seemed to be missing.
But I could see no reason to look outside
of the world of Mormonism.

I did not realize it then,
but there was no hope for me
unless God chose by his grace
to pull me from darkness into his light.

Then there came a day
like so many other days,
but something was different,
intensely different.
There was a hunger in my heart for Jesus.
It was just suddenly there from God:
An intense driving hunger for Jesus.
It was just as real as hunger for food,
but it was in my heart
and it was for Jesus.

Despite all the talk about Jesus
that occurred in the Mormon church,
nothing there could begin to satisfy
the unrelenting driving hunger.

Then I remembered
that the Christians had a lot to say about Jesus.
So I began to listen to Christian radio.
Day after day,
week after week,
I listened as I sought to fill the driving hunger.

What was about to happen
would change me forever.

Face of Christ

In "First Light",
I told how God began
to draw me out
of the darkness of Mormonism
by giving me an intense driving hunger
in my heart for Jesus
that pulled me toward him.
Day after day,
week after week,
I listened to Christian radio
as I sought to fill the driving hunger.

Finally, on Passover day about noon
as I listened to a minister on Christian radio
expound from the book of Romans
about Christ being our Righteous Substitution
who went to the cross in our place,
suddenly as though a light went on inside
I understood!

Christ was my Righteousness!
I was not my righteousness.
I was not saving myself.
My repentance, my efforts, my church,
my baptism, my giving, my anything,
was not saving me.
Christ was my Salvation.
I was not my salvation.

For all those years,
I had trusted part in myself
and part in Christ
for salvation.
But now I put all my faith in Christ
to be my Salvation.
I knew that my eternal destiny was in his hands.
Only Christ could save me
from eternal destruction.

In that exact moment
that I placed all my faith in Christ to save me,
Jesus Christ came into my heart!
It was as though shells of hardness
of which I had always been unaware,
that had covered my heart,
had suddenly been pushed apart
and into my heart had come Christ.
I knew that light had filled darkness.
Before I had known about Christ,
but now I knew him!
I knew him as though meeting him face to face!
The driving hunger had been filled with Jesus Christ!

God had given me the faith
to totally trust Christ for salvation.
I had taken all my trust for salvation
off of myself and everything else
and placed it all on Christ,
and he had come into my heart
to become my Righteousness and Eternal Life.

I tried to tell others at the Mormon church
about what had happened,
but no one seemed to understand.
No longer fitting in there,
I began to attend a Christian church.

I had received Christ.
But I was still unaware
of the unseen source behind Mormonism.

An intense struggle was about to begin inside--
a struggle that would be ended
suddenly and decisively by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Eternity Comes

Maybe you realize that pursuing this world
will take you nowhere.
And maybe you know that eternity comes
and that you need to get right with God.
But how are you going to do that?
If you go to the Bible,
you are going in the right direction.
There God is speaking to man,
generation after generation,
with dates, places, mighty works, and focus.
That focus is Jesus Christ the Son of God.
Foretold in the Bible for many centuries,
Jesus Christ came in the power of God,
went to the cross to pay for our sins
to make us right with God,
and rose again as seen by many people.
One of those people was Paul
who at the time was trying to stop Christianity.
But Jesus Christ appeared to him,
and afterwards God gave him by revelation
the gospel of the grace of God
to take to the nations of the earth.
God revealed to Paul
that the way to be right with God
is by faith in Jesus Christ for salvation
rather than by the law of God.
By placing faith in Christ to save us,
we have the righteousness of God
rather than our own righteousness
that comes by efforts to keep the law.
However, as generations passed,
rather than trusting Christ for salvation,
so many people began to trust
in their efforts and church and baptism.
Then God showed Martin Luther
that our entire faith must be
on Jesus Christ for salvation,
and the Protestant Reformation began.
But since then,
even among Protestants
many people do not realize
that their trust must be totally on Jesus Christ.
So many people want to trust partly Christ
and partly church and their efforts
rather than trusting Christ to save them.
But the gospel of the grace of God
is still the same:
To be right with God,
trust Jesus Christ the Son of God.

You Must Know

People can get so convinced of things
that only God can reach them.
Some people actually do not even know
there is a God.
That state of denial does not hold up for them
in eternity at all.
Some people are placing their trust in science,
and science knows so little
about the spiritual realm.
Many people are trusting in religious leaders
who could not even deliver themselves
from death yet alone deliver anyone else.
Others profess to trust in Christ,
but will not trust him to save them;
they just keep trying to save themselves.
But there are those who God gives the faith
to trust entirely in Jesus Christ for their salvation.
They know they cannot save themselves,
including by church, baptism, or efforts.
Their faith for salvation is totally on Christ
who saved them by taking their place
and paying for their sins on the cross.
Because their faith is on Christ,
they have the righteousness of God
that comes by faith
rather than their own righteousness
that comes by efforts.
Because they trust Christ for eternal life,
they have the free gift
of righteousness and life
that comes by the grace of God,
the unmerited favor of God,
through Jesus Christ the Son of God.

This Is For You

Maybe you have wealth,
maybe millions or even billions;
or maybe you have fame or power.
But you already know
what you need is something else.

Unlike this world,
eternity is a long time,
in fact, forever.

You know what you need for eternity:
Being right with God,
so that you have eternal life.

But how do you get right with God?
How do you get saved
out of death into eternal life?

God gave his Son
to take your place on the cross
to pay for your sins
so that you could be right with him.

This is how you receive
that reconciliation with God:
Trust Jesus Christ to save you.

Trusting Christ really means that.
It means trusting him
rather than trusting yourself,
or your religion, or your church,
or your efforts, or your baptism,
or your giving, or your anything else.

God in his great love for you,
gave his Son to be slain on the cross
in your place for your sins
so that you could be right with him.
Trust Jesus Christ the Son of God;
he has eternal life for you.

Your Only Hope

Jesus Christ is your only hope,
and he is your sure hope.
God chose the apostle Paul
to take the gospel to the nations,
and he revealed to him
that no one will be justified
by the law of God,
but only by Christ through our faith.
Jesus Christ took your place
and paid for your sins on the cross,
so that the grace of God,
the unmerited favor of God,
could be yours by faith in Christ.
Your hope is not you or your efforts,
or your church or your baptism,
or your anything.
Your hope is Christ;
put your total trust on him to save you,
and he will that moment give you eternal life.

Now About Eternity

You know enough about this world
to know that you have better things to do
than pursue its fading attractions.
Those who gain the whole world,
gain nothing.

Now about eternity.
Only Jesus Christ can give you eternal life.
He rose again
after being slain on a cross for your sins.
He died liked that so you could be saved.
It is well for you to spend forever with God,
serving him in love, peace, and joy.

It makes no difference who you are,
or what your situation is,
or what you have done.

This is what makes the difference:
God gave his Son Jesus Christ
to take your place on the cross
so you could have the free gift of God,
Christ living in you,
which is eternal life.
That gift becomes yours forever
the moment you totally trust Christ
to save you.

Totally?
Yes, total trust in Christ.
You cannot be trusting anything else
to save you.
That includes any church you attend.
That includes any efforts you make.

So now about eternity.
Trust Jesus Christ the Son of God.
He is right there this moment
with eternal life for you.

To Be Right With God

You want to be right with God.
He gave his Son Jesus Christ
to take your place on the cross
so that you could be reconciled with him.
Now trust Christ to save you.
Yes, put your faith on Christ for salvation.
Not on you, or your efforts, or your giving,
or your church, or your baptism,
or your anything.
Trust Jesus Christ to save you,
and he will come into you,
and live his life in you,
and be your Eternal Life.

Eternal Life Is

The world is so busy going after its millions of different pursuits.
It has been so generation after generation.
But each person eventually comes to realize that the fame and pleasures and power of this world mean absolutely nothing when the time comes that the only thing that means anything is eternal life.
Do not go out of this world without it.
Eternal Life is Jesus Christ the Son of God.
Throw yourself on his mercy to save you;
he is received by trusting him totally, completely, absolutely, entirely for your salvation.

Reached By God

People are concerned about eternity.
Billions are trusting the religions of this world.
Hundreds of millions are trusting churches.
Those people reached by God are trusting Jesus Christ.
Do not let the religions and churches of this world
keep you from trusting Jesus Christ for your salvation.
Christ will give you eternal life if you will place
all of your trust for salvation in only him.
He is the Son of God,
and in his great love for you,
he took your place on the cross
and paid the penalty for all your sins.
Millions have placed all their trust on Christ
and have received eternal life.

Salvation for you

The thief on the cross
who called out to Jesus for salvation
found out that the grace of God
through Jesus Christ the Son of God
is for anyone, anytime, anywhere.
And that includes you,
whoever, wherever, however, whatever you are.
Cast yourself on the mercy of Jesus Christ;
trust Christ entirely and completely to save you,
and he will give you eternal life now.

You Need Christ

Some people think they have this world figured out.
But the only one who has it figured out is God.
He made it.
And he says that sin is a problem.
And he does not want you to be lost in eternity because of what you have done in this world.
In his great love for you, God gave his only Son to take the penalty for the sin of the whole world upon himself.
That is what Christ did on the cross.
But that will be of no profit to you unless you trust Christ to save you.
What does that mean?
That means not trusting you, your church, your commitment, your baptism, your efforts, your repentance, your giving, your sacrifice; it means trusting Christ totally, absolutely, entirely, completely to save you.
Yes, God does want repentance, baptism, church, commitment, efforts, giving, sacrifice, but your faith for salvation is to be on Christ
who in his great love for you took your place on the cross.
There are thousands of things that this world trusts in for salvation, but your trust cannot be on Christ alone if you are trusting in other things.
Jesus Christ is worthy of your faith.
If you will trust him to save you,
he will give you eternal life.

Heaven Is Yours

Those of you who have trusted
Jesus Christ to save you
(rather than trusting yourself,
efforts, or church to save you),
have eternal life.
Heaven is yours.
So do not get discouraged.
Your salvation is not
how you feel about things.
Your Salvation is Jesus Christ,
and no one
(not you, or the world,
or any power of darkness)
can ever take you away from him.

In the Garden

Verse 1

I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

Chorus

And He walks with me, And He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

Verse 2

He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet, The birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me,
Within my heart is ringing.

Verse 3

I'd stay in the garden with Him,
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; Through the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling.
