How to be born again

Man's need for God and his Son

1 John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 10:10 "I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

John 1:9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world..

John 8:12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

1 Corinthians 2:9 However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Mark 8:36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Hebrews 9:27b Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.

2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Romans 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

1 Corinthians 15:3-6 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

Romans 5:8-10 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

What is Faith?

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Matthew 17:20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

John 5:24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

Romans 10:9,13 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

What is Repentance?

2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness."

Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

Luke 13:3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.

Matthew 3:8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

Galatians 5:16-25 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."

Being Born Again

John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

John 12:23-26 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."

Galations 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me."

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

John 10:14,15,27 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me / just as the Father knows me and I know the Father–and I lay down my life for the sheep. / My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

2 Cor 6:2b I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.

Rev 3:20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

Acts 16:30-31 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."

Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

"Dear Jesus,
I believe that you are the Son of God
and that you died on the cross
and came back to life in order to save me.
Thank you for taking the punishment for my sins.
I confess that you are Lord and that I’m a sinner.
I'm sorry for the things I’ve done wrong in my life.
I repent from sin and ask that you forgive and cleanse me.
My desire right now is to surrender my life to you
and become born again.
I want to know you so I ask you to come into my heart
and give me your gift of eternal life.
Help me to love, follow, and have faith in you
and grow strong in your teachings and wisdom.
Help me to have a relationship with you Lord through prayer.
Show me how to put you first in my life and to obey you.
In your holy name I pray,
Amen."

A valuable addition by Bob on alt.messianic

Re: Being Born Again

Maybe I just missed it, but there's a pertinent point to being "born again" I didn't see in your post.

The Lord  said, "Except ye repent, ye shall likewise perish."

Repentance is essential to salvation; and being "born again" is essential to salvation.  I am submitting that the two are the same thing.

"Repentance" is greatly misunderstood as "being sorry for something," which is not what the word means at all.  It's the Grk word, metanoia (the noun: the verb, repent, is metanoew).

A very similar word is something we all understand: metamorphe.  Metamorphoomaioccurs in Matt. 17:2, Mar. 9:2, Rom. 12:2, and 2 Cor. 3:18.  The latter verse is figurative, but the word literally means changed form or body.

Our English word from it is metamorphosis, where we have this ugly yucky caterpillar squirming and wriggling along.

Does he get sorry for what he is?  He, like the lost sinner, doesn't even know what he is.  Does he decide to change?  Not as far as we can tell (cp Eph. 2:1-3).

What he does, at God's direction, is to build himself a cocoon, and then he just relaxes, trusting in God, and sacks out in his cocoon.

And GOD changes him!  metamorphosis refers to a CHANGED BODY!

And God, and God alone, did it for him.  He had nothing to do with it except to rest in God.

metamorphosis means a changed body: metanoia (repentance) means a CHANGED MIND. Both have the same Cause.  It means being "born from above," by the Power of God.

A person who has experienced metanoia still may look the same, and for awhile may even act the same.  But he isn't the same any longer, any more than the caterpillar is.  He has a completely transformed mind.
(2 Cor. 5:17).  He is a "new creation."  He has been "born from above" (John 3:3).

He has a completely different world view.  He has the ability to discern the Scriptures, and he loves Them (John 10:26-28).  And there is now a Force within him that causes him to "grow," similar to the way a newborn baby grows.

John 3:3-5, 2 Cor 5:17, 1 Peter 2:2, Eph. 2:10, Rom. 8:9, etc.

God is going to do that for the entire saved Israel, in Ezek 36-39, in the future.  The results are given in the Septuagint of Isa. 59:20-21, quoted in Rom. 11:26.

The newsgroup "alt.messianic" will be entirely transformed also, as a result.
